With the support of the New Hampshire Community Technical College and the local Internet service provider, North Country Internet Access, Berlin High School developed its presence on the World Wide Web in the fall of 1995. Mathematics teacher Mr. Sweeny together with three students created the Berlin High School Home Page after receiving training in the Hypertext Markup Language at the Tech. NCIA generously allowed the numerous files to be stored on their server so that anyone with Internet access could view the site. The work completed by this team was recognized by Adobe Press in their book entitled Kids do the Web(1996).
During the 1996-97 school year the home page maintenance tasks were handled by students Ken Cutting, Tom Labrecque, Andrew Matthies, and Jay Matthies in an independent study course offered by Mr. Sweeny.
During the 1997-1998 school year, Mr. Sweeny worked with a group of six students to update and improve the site. The work was instrumental in making BHS the "Cool School of the Week", an award presented by Education World. Anyone visiting the Berlin High School Home Page can find all sorts of information about BHS and the surrounding area. Links to other educational sites can also be found. New additions to the site include a guest book that visitors can sign and a counter that lets the web team know how many hits the site receives and where they are from. A tickertape message welcomes visitors to the page and provides daily notices.
During the 1998-1999 school year the Web Site maintenance and improvement duties were handled by three students under the supervision of Mr. Sweeny during block IV each day. A Berlin High Listserv was created, the school newspaper went online, and existing pages were updated. We are also pleased to report that one web team member, one student webmaster was hired at NCIA, the local ISP, after doing some volunteer work for them. A fun (and challenging) endeavor was to make several Visual Basic programs (created by the BHS VB class) available to the Internet community (downloadable).
The 1999-2000 year web team included three hardworking students. One of these students actually formulated his own web page design business.
In 2000-2001, 2001-2002, and 2002-2003 the BHS Web Page did not undergo many changes except for the day to day maintenance with respect to new alumni addresses being added, school newspaper posting, updates to the school calendar, faculty updates, and sports teams listings. Mr. Sweeny does most of this on his own except for the school newspaper updates, which are assigned to a student in the journalism class.
