For several years, Berlin High School benefitted from a Transition Grant Project, developed and delivered by
the Learning and Career Center at New Hampshire Community Technical College and funded by the NH Department of
Education. Programs offered to at-risk youth at BHS included alternative and supplemental academic course work,
career development projects, and links with business and industry through a variety of activities. In 1997, the
grant included funding for an innovative peer tutoring program. After a selection process and a brief training
session at the College, peer tutors were hired and worked at BHS, providing one-to-one and group tutoring for students
who were having academic difficulty. Mathematics teacher, Mr. Sweeny was responsible for all in-house aspects of
the program, including scheduling students, providing tutoring strategies, and tracking student's progress. Peer
tutors were paid stipends out of the Transition Grant. Berlin High's first peer tutors included Stacey, Alana,
Karen, Missy, Jessica, Bryan, and Amber. They did a job that could, without hesitation, be classified as professional.
They set the stage for the future of the program.
Students interested in receiving peer tutoring should obtain a peer tutoring request form from their teacher
or the guidance department and submit it to Mr. Sweeny. Documentation will be kept on all sessions to facilitate
the process of acquiring future funding.
1997-1998 Peer Tutors

Additional funding through a North Country Educational Foundation mini-grant as well as continued funding from
the State Dept. of Education allowed the program to expand during the 1998-1999 school year. Student tutors included
Eric, Karen, Katie, Bethany, Nicole, Coleen, Andrea, Becky, Mike, Marc, Rachelle, Bria, Erika, Ryan, Rabia, Renee,
Erin, Missy, and Chris.
1998-1999 Peer Tutors

During the 1999-2000 school year the Peer Tutoring Program was once again serving students thanks to continued
support from the State Dept. of Education and an organization entitled Students
for Other Students. Check out their web site! During the year over 700 hours of tutoring took place with over
100 students taking advantage the program.

The 1999-2000 Peer Tutors included Samantha, Tracy, Eric, Stacy, Corey, Amy, Heather, Matt, Jill, Bethany,
Ryan, Stacie, Heather, Rick, Becky, Andrea, Eric, Josh, Erin, Laurie, Rachelle, and Krystal.
1999-2000 Peer Tutors

During the academic year 2000-2001 the tutoring program was up and running again. The district helped support the
program financially and SOS continued to
match the district's contribution. Tutors hired include, Samantha, Ryan, Becky, Stacy, Jeff, Matt, Monica, Laurie,
Erin, Josh, Krystal, Caryn, Melissa, Tracy, Tia, and Eric.
2000-2001 Peer Tutors

Peer tutors continued to service students having difficulties in their studies during the 2001-2002
school year. With funding from the district and from our good friends at SOS, 14 tutors were hired and maintained
the tradition of excellent tutoring. Tutors included Sheila, Will, Caryn, Tracy, Jeff, Nicole, Monica, Matt, Nate,
Joe, Katie, Josh, Amy, and Cara.
2001-2002 Peer Tutors

During the 2003-2004 school year the peer-tutoring program once again serviced students.
2002-2003 Peer Tutors

During our seventh year of the program, a record number of peer-tutors were hired. The 21 peer-tutors
did an outstanding job. Funding came from remaining grant monies and the district itself.
2003-2004

To help fund the 2004-2005 program Mr. Sweeny wrote and received a K-12 seed grant from the Eastern Alliance in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(EAST). The grant was entitled "Peer-Tutoring for Students with Disabilities".
The funds received through this grant were used specifically to fund the tutoring provided to students with individual
educational plans.
Wal-Mart also generously awarded some funds to the program in response to a request made by
Mr. Sweeny.
No Pictures Available...We didn't get around to it. :-(
The 2005-2006 peer-tutoring program once again served students requiring extra help in their studies.
Eleven tutors were hired.
