The offerings in the Music Department include the High School Concert Band, the High School Chorus, Music Theory, Music Fundamentals, and the Pep Band.
THE CONCERT BAND9,10,11,12
36 weeks - 1/2 block (skinny)
1 credit
The Concert Band concentrates on the more difficult aspects of concert music. Along with preparations for several performances throughout the year, emphasis is given to scales, dynamics, phrasing, and musicality. Time is also spent teaching basic marching skills, and the band marches in community parades when an invitation is received. A trip to the New Hampshire Large Group Festival Competition is scheduled annually, and major trips to more distant competitions are scheduled if quality requirements are met, and with administrative approval.
THE PEP BAND9,10,11,12
The Pep Band meets as the schedule of events requires, in years where sufficient student interest is shown. As a smaller group, the pep band will play different music from the concert band and will play at most home games. Students may be members of the pep band while not participating in the concert band, but no credit is given.
THE CHORUS9,10,11,12
36 weeks - 1/2 block (skinny)
1 credit
Chorus meets for 1/2 block, 5 days a week, and is a pass/fail course. A wide variety of choral literature is studied each year, with emphasis placed on tonal development, and part independence. Three and four part pieces will be chosen for study, with level of difficulty based on the group's ability level and enrollment. A minimum of two concerts with mandatory attendance is required. Trips to festivals may be scheduled, dependent upon the group's ability level and performances.
Enrollment is limited. Director recommendation and/or audition is required. Students must be able to match pitch and occasionally preform in small groups for evaluation.
MUSIC THEORY9,10,11,12
36 weeks - 1/2 block (skinny)
1 credit
The Music theory class will meet during the second half of block IV for the entire year for one credit. The course will consist of work with rhythms, key signatures, scales, chords, and melody writing which will allow students to compose their own music. This class is open to all students, and prior knowledge in music, although helpful, is not necessary. Music Theory can only be taken as a full year class, and it is highly recommended for any student planning to further their education in the music field.
