EXPLORATORY COURSES: FRENCH, SPANISH, GERMAN, ITALIAN

Exploratory courses provide an introduction to the languages of French, Spanish, Germain, and Italian. These courses allow all students to familiarize themselves with several languages before making a final choice for further study. They also provide students the opportunity to choose a language most compatible with their interests and needs. These courses also provide students with skills enabling them to function and communicate successfully in routine but essential daily conversations. Students will also learn about the culture and customs of the countries where French, Spanish, German, and Italian are spoken.

FRENCH I, SPANISH I, GERMAN I, ITALIAN I

This course is an in-depth study of the fundamentals of the four basic skills of a language: speaking, understanding, reading and writing. It provides the student with a basic foundation in the language. Students will also gain knowledge of other cultures. Emphasis is placed on using the target language as much as possible in the classroom. Students are encouraged to use and practice their skills in the community. Upon successful completion of this course, the student may elect to advance to Level II (or Accelerated French II, in the French program, with permission of the instructor).

FRENCH II, SPANISH II, GERMAN II, ITALIAN II

Prerequisite: 70 in Level I course

This advanced novice course reviews and builds on the skill developed in the Level I course. The student will increase his/her ability to communicate effectively in all areas of the language. The course is supplemented with appropriate readings. Upon successful completion of this course, the student may elect to advance to Level III (French or Spanish).

FRENCH III, SPANISH III

Prerequisite: 70 in Level III or Accelerated French III

This is an intermediate course designed to expand the skill acquired in the Level I and II courses. Students will use the target language to increase their oral and written proficiency. They will continue to develop their communication skills in the use of everyday language. Knowledge and understanding of the perspectives of the culture being studied will be expanded. Students will use the language in the classroom and in the community for personal enjoyment and enrichment. Upon successful completion of this course, the student may elect to advance to Level 4 (French or Spanish).

FRENCH IV, SPANISH IV

Prerequisite: 70 in Level III or Accelerated French III

This advanced course refines the language skills the student has previously acquired. The student will work to attain greater proficiency in all aspects of the language.

FRENCH V, SPANISH V

This course is designed for those students who intend to continue their study of the languages beyond high school. Preparation for the Achievement Test and/or Advanced Placement Test will be offered.

ACCELERATED FRENCH I

9,10,11,12

This honors course is an in-depth study of the four basic skills of the language for students who desire to develop their skills at a faster pace. Students will be expected to demonstrate initiative and motivation. Upon successful completion of this course, the student may elect to advance to Accelerated French II.

ACCELERATED FRENCH II

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accelerated French I or 90 in French I

This course is a continuation of Accelerated French I. Emphasis is on refining and augmenting the skills acquired in Accelerated French I. Upon successful completion of this course, the students may elect to advance to Accelerated French III.

ACCELERATED FRENCH III

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accelerated French II

This course will introduce students to selected literary works. It will also refine their oral and written skills. This Honors Course is for students who plan to continue their study of French in the future. Preparation for Achievement Test and/or Advanced Placement Test will be offered.
