ART I

This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of line, color, design, form and structure. The course involves an exploration of methods and media in still life and outside drawing from observation, the theory of color, design and composition, printmaking and calligraphy. This course will satisfy the half credit Fine Arts requirement.

ART II

Prerequisite: Art I

Art II is a further development and expansion of principles as taught in the Art I. Three-dimensional Art (Sculpture), figure drawing, painting and the graphic arts are emphasized

CERAMICS

Prerequisites: Art I and Art II

This course is designed to introduce students to clay as an art material and expose them to the different possibilities of working clay. The emphasis is on the understanding and development of basic principles and skills of handbuilding, slip-casting and throwing on the potter's wheel.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

This course consists of the development of package designs, book covers, cartoon, film and television graphics, poster designs, exhibits, and computer graphics. Problem solving and the design process are emphasized

PRINTMAKING

Prerequisites: Art I and Art II

Students work in producing linecuts, woodcuts, silkscreen prints, engravings and embossing, in one and two colors, with an opportunity to go deeper into one area. Technical and aesthetic problems of producing plate and print is emphasized

PAPERMAKING

Prerequisites: Art I and Art II

This course will provide the student with an opportunity to make and use mold made and hand cast paper as an art medium in solving problems of design. Gathering and processing local fibers, dying and pigmenting pulp, three-dimensional and two-dimensional casting procedures is the focal point of the learning experience

DRAWING

Prerequisite: Art I

An objective drawing course which stresses four major areas: perspective, composition, controlling line and tone and their contrast to realize forms in space, and point of view. Exploration of space, perspective, proportion, effects of light and shadow, rendering and composition is emphasized along with a study of the human figure with emphasis on construction, gesture, composition and accurate representation of the human form. Drawing techniques in a large variety of black and white and color media are presented, and abstract and non-objective drawing are introduced

SCULPTURE

Prerequisites: Art I and Art II

This course will allow the student to choose from various media and techniques. Problems in sculpture are designed to expose the student to a broad area of experiences dealing with form, scale, weight, color, movement and varied use of space. Students are encouraged to work with their own interests. They may work non-objectively or figuratively in clay modeling, mold making, cement casting, wood carving, stone carving, welding, fiberglass and epoxy resins

PAINTING

Prerequisites: Art I and Art II

An expressive painting course designed to develop facility in composition, color mixing and modulation, special tensions, paint quality, brush and knife techniques. A development of the individual painter's ideas, images, and point of view is encouraged. The students will gain familiarity with paint and brush so that they can be used naturally and easily. Color systems, emotional and psychological uses of color and color harmonies are emphasized in the execution of both easel and mural paintings

ADVANCED ART

18 weeks
1 credit
Prerequisite: 2 credits of High School Art, and Art I and Art II

This course consists of the development of applicable skills, techniques and media. Individual projects and independent exploration are emphasized. YOU NEED THE INSTRUCTOR'S WRITTEN PERMISSION TO REGISTER FOR THIS COURSE. Prerequisites are Art I and Art II.
